The End of Summer (Where Did Everyone Go?)

Crystal Lake is still swimable, boatable, fishable, but most of our seasonal residents and visitors
left before Labor Day, or are contemplating their departure as schools and colleges commence.

(This is representative of the abrupt stillness of the Lake and absence
of activity after Labor Day but before the winter sets in.

"As we near the end of yet another great summer at Crystal Lake, recall the fond memories of
renewing aquaintances with old friends and making new ones. The ripples that we've made
spread and dissipate but the Lake awaits those of another season."

In Greek mythology, *Iris* is the personification of the rainbow and a messenger of the gods
linking them to humanity. She travels with the speed of the wind about the lands and into the
depths of the waters. As a perennial herb, the Iris grows from creeping rhizomes adapting
well to sandy soils. The Iris flower exemplifies the relation between flowering plants and
pollinating insects by providing an attractive and functional landing-stage for flying insects.

(So in a sense, Iris is associated with communications and messages and welcomes the lakies
back to Crystal Lake. She is featured in Shakespeare's, The Tempest, and in Homers' Illiad,
both dealing with lakes and oceans.)

Where is Archibald Jones when we need him?

Every spring the Outlet Dam fills with sand. Eventually the whitecaps of the Lake
flush out the deposits. In 2011 a little extra help was needed by digging a trench
to jump-start the process!
